You have a transformation to share and telling one person at a time or lobbing parts out on social media isn’t cutting it. You may, like me, may have started social media accounts and started sharing bits of your transformation story.
You are stuck in a cycle of putting out content, reels on Instagram, witty paragraphs, and quotes about your topic, but it’s so much work. And at the end of the day, you don’t know if anyone is reading it anyway. You have this feeling that you aren’t really reaching your target audience – the person who needs to hear exactly what you have to say.
Do you need a valid reason to put pen to page and write a nonfiction book?
You are the one who lived your story and you are the one to tell it. If this is you, read on, I’m going to share exactly why YOU should write your nonfiction book.
Not sure you can write a nonfiction book? We can help with that. This checklist will confirm five reasons you CAN write a nonfiction book right now!
You should write a nonfiction book and here’s why:
1. A book helps readers solve a problem.
You have a problem or trauma you have overcome – one that you have struggled with. Your book answers a question that readers are asking. You should write your nonfiction book because it will help readers solve a problem. It will answer a question that you have a solution to because you lived through it. Whether it’s gluten-free living because you are a celiac diagnosed later in your life. You had to pivot, learn new ways of cooking, and start taking food everywhere you went. Or embracing healthy eating after recovering from an eating disorder. You have tips and tools that you can offer because you lived through it. You went through the fire and came out on the other side stronger, better, and with a message to share.
2. Builds self-confidence.
Nothing erodes your confidence more than posting 1,000 messages on social media and getting five people commenting and one of them is your aunt. It can make you feel as if you don’t really have the skill it takes to share your story of transformation or the thing you feel passionate about. Like it doesn’t matter. You didn’t matter. May I be honest as a hornet sting? Social media response is not the measure of the quality of your message. Just because people scroll through and like the pretty photo or only comment on the DIY and beautiful homes, or the cute babies doesn’t mean your message isn’t relevant or important. Do you know where I search when I want an answer to a question? Hint: it’s not social media. I look for a book. A whole book that I can read, highlight in, listen to, and learn from. I love listening to stories of overcoming completely with practical suggestions to do the same. There are a group of people just waiting for you to write your book so they can highlight in it. I write notes in the margin. Quote it to their friends (the first time I heard someone quoting one of my books on a podcast I was overwhelmed with shock and joy at the same time.) Readers resonate with your message. You’ll bring value and transformation to their lives.
3. Positions you as an expert.
This is a tough one. I didn’t think of myself as an expert on anything. I seemed to be surrounded by family members who are infinitely more intelligent than I am -including some of my children. And I have friends with Masters, Doctorates, and training in all sorts of things. So who was I, a stay-at-home, homeschooling adoptive mom with a math and education degree to write a nonfiction book? I’m an expert and so are you. I’m an expert on my life. And you’re an expert on yours. I’m sure you have a specific idea for your book. One that you’ve lived through and have a degree through experience. You’ve read the books. Listened to the podcasts. You’ve made the hard changes needed and moved from _____ to a transformation. You’re an expert on your story. Now you’re going to write the book and share your expertise with the world.
4. You have a physical or digital copy of your message to share.
Instead of telling one person at a time or lobbing out posts on social media, you can offer them your book. My first book took me 12 years to write, don’t do that. Write it now. I had many people ask me questions about our adoption journey. The Why. The How. The Who. Why did you travel all the way across the world and adopt kids you had never met? The truth is these people weren’t being nosy. They were thinking about adopting/fostering themselves. They wanted to know the answers to their questions.
- Can I love a child I didn’t birth?
- Is adoption something I can do?
- Or is it just for people who have lots of money and achieved sainthood?
Then one day, I ran into a woman in the grocery store she began the litany of questions mentioned above and I wished I had a copy of my book to hand her. The book that I had half-finished. That particular incident spurred me into action. It was past time to finish. An amazing benefit of having a digital or physical copy of your book is it saves you energy. You don’t have to verbally tell your story every time. Nor do you have to only write posts on social media or on your website. You can do that and the reader who needs to hear what you have to say can order your book! You can help people you will never meet in person. Plus you can reach into the future with your book and help people you will never meet. How cool is that?
5. Your book will inspire readers to move forward in their own healing journey.
This point is the most important. I don’t need to tell you that. You have the vision to help others. You have a transformation to offer. Or a cause that’s been keeping you up at night. You keep talking, posting, and sharing. You’re discouraged that no one is listening. Maybe you, like me did some coaching and by the time the person got to you for help, her “house was on fire” and she was in survival mode. She didn’t do the homework you assigned. She didn’t try any of the practical tools and suggestions you offered. And so she stayed stuck. And you walked away emotionally depleted and wounded. You felt (like me) like you couldn’t help anyone get to a place of transformation or healing. And when I say healing, I’m not ONLY speaking of physical healing. It could be having an organized home means a more peaceful mom kind of healing. Here’s the truth about your book. A book is a non-confrontational way for people to solve a problem or make a transformation. For some reason, we humans don’t go to the doctor, the coach, or the therapist until our “house is on fire” and we’re unable to move forward. We’re stuck in survival mode. We can’t process and we are stuck. And it’s a deep pit to crawl out off. Been there. Done that.
But a book. Oh, a book. It’s sitting there on the Amazon site, on the bookshelf at Barnes and Noble, or in the cute quaint bookstore in your hometown. You read the title and pick it up. You take it home and read it with a cup of coffee, leap up to grab your highlighter, and then your journal. Right there in the quiet of her comfy window seat, your reader is going on a journey with you. She’s stopping and wondering if you wrote this book just for her. She writes “ME” beside paragraphs that speak to her. Then she gets to the practical tools and suggestions and starts applying them quietly. Not mentioning them to anyone until they work. Then she begins telling friends, quoting you, and the best part – she is healing. She takes some of the tips she’s practicing and shares them with her life coach or therapist who cheers her on (and secretly thinks – finally, a breakthrough).
